Titanium Dioxide Product Overview
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a bright white, inert powder with a very high refractive index, which gives excellent opacity and whiteness. Rutile grades offer the highest opacity and weather resistance, whereas anatase grades are softer and more photoactive. Commercial pigments are often surface-treated with alumina or silica.
In addition, paint and coating producers use it as the main white pigment in architectural and industrial coatings, and plastics producers use it in masterbatches, films and profiles. Similarly, paper producers use it for brightness and opacity, and cosmetic formulators use it as a colorant (CI 77891) and, in nano form, as a mineral UV filter, often together with Zinc oxide. In the EU, it is no longer permitted as the food additive E171.
