Boron Nitride Product Overview
Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has a layered structure similar to graphite, which gives it lubricity, but it is white, electrically insulating and stable in air up to about 900°C. Its in-plane thermal conductivity is high, so it conducts heat while insulating electrically. Cubic boron nitride (cBN) is the second hardest material after diamond.
Polymer and electronics producers use hBN powder as a thermally conductive, electrically insulating filler in thermal interface materials, potting compounds and plastics, often alongside Aluminum nitride. Foundries and glass producers use it as a high-temperature release agent and lubricant, and cosmetic formulators use it for a silky skin feel. Hot-pressed hBN is made into machinable blocks, crucibles and insulating components for furnaces and vacuum equipment. cBN is used in grinding wheels and cutting tools for hardened steel.
