Barium Sulfate Product Overview
Barium sulfate (BaSO4) is a white, odorless powder with a high density of about 4.5 g/cm³. It is practically insoluble in water and acids, so, unlike soluble barium salts such as Barium chloride, it is chemically inert and of low toxicity.
In addition, paint and coating producers use precipitated barium sulfate (blanc fixe) as a filler that improves gloss, chemical resistance and sanding. Similarly, plastic producers add it to increase density and reduce shrinkage, while pharmaceutical companies use medical grades as the classic X-ray contrast medium for the digestive tract. Ground natural barite is the main weighting agent in oil and gas drilling fluids.
