Allantoin Product Overview
Allantoin (C4H6N4O3) is a white, odorless crystalline powder. Comfrey root and several other plants contain it naturally, but commercial material comes from synthesis using glyoxylic acid and Urea. It dissolves only to about 0.5% in water at room temperature, so formulators usually add it to the warm water phase.
In addition, cosmetic chemists value it for its skin-soothing and smoothing effect and its excellent tolerance, even in products for sensitive skin. Typical uses include face and body creams, hand creams, after-sun and after-shave products, baby care, lip balms and shampoos. It often appears in formulas together with Glycerine, Aloe barbadensis and Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Salt).
Toothpaste and mouthwash producers also use it in oral care. Because it is stable across a wide pH range and compatible with most cosmetic ingredients, it fits easily into existing formulations.
